Cotton
The Australian Cotton Business
Cargill has returned to the Australian cotton market after being away for 10 years. We have made big investments to support local agriculture and strengthen the cotton industry. The main focus is the upgraded Narrabri plant, which is now a dedicated cottonseed dehulling facility.
The Narrabri plant processes cottonseeds by removing the hulls, which are used as feedstock in Australia. The cottonseed meats are sent to Newcastle, where they are turned into high-quality oil and meal. The oil replaces imported cottonseed oil and is a premium product for Australia's food industry. The meal is a nutritious animal feed, especially good for the beef industry.
Cargill's involvement in the cotton business connects the agriculture value chain, from local growers to processing, and finally to food and feed products. This approach creates jobs and economic opportunities in regional areas and ensures the sustainability of the cotton industry in Australia.
Cargill also offers cost-effective and high-quality alternatives to imported products. The cottonseed meal is a preferred choice for livestock producers, helping improve animal health and growth while reducing feed costs. The locally produced oil supports Australia's domestic supply chain and enhances food security.
Cargill's investment in Australia's cotton business shows our commitment to local production, supporting growers, and ensuring sustainable practices. The return to the market brings innovation and prosperity to Australian agriculture.
Cargill has started originating cotton lint again through our regional Origination Team in all growing areas of Australia. We work with our global network to supply cotton to key import markets like India, Bangladesh, China, and Vietnam.
