Investing in the future of Australian canola

At Cargill, we love canola and oilseeds. For over six decades we have been investing in the future of the Australian oilseeds industry, helping to build one of Australia’s most important agricultural products and exports.

For more than 60 years, Cargill has been a leader in the Australian oilseeds industry. From seed supply to refining, we are part of the entire supply chain - working alongside Australian farmers, feedlots, and the food industry to deliver high-quality products that add value at every step.

Chris Liston, Cargill’s General Manager of Agriculture and Trading Australia, explains:

“We supply specialty seed to farmers, we’re a major buyer of canola, and we provide storage, handling, and crush facilities for oilseeds. We also operate Australia’s largest cotton crushing facility at Narrabri.”

  • Cargill supplies specialty canola seed to farmers and buys back their harvest, ensuring market access and strong local demand.
  • Our crushing plants in Newcastle, Narrabri, and Footscray have recently seen $100 million in upgrades. These facilities crush canola into oil for food manufacturing and food service, and produce high-protein canola meal for beef, dairy, and poultry industries.
  • We’ve pioneered this program to provide growers with leading canola varieties that deliver premium oil quality and strong market demand.
  • Australia’s first sustainable canola program, SustainConnect rewards growers who use practices such as no-till farming, stubble retention, organic fertiliser, cover crops, and legumes. By producing canola with a lower carbon footprint, farmers earn premiums while helping customers like Arnott’s meet their emissions targets.

The reopening of our Narrabri cotton crushing plant — after being closed in 2018 due to drought — shows our commitment to creating value locally instead of sending product offshore for processing.
Canola is set to play an important role in Australia’s cleaner energy future. With the federal government investing $1.1 billion in its Cleaner Fuels Program, Cargill is well positioned to support the development of a domestic biofuels industry, leveraging global experience from North America where canola is already a major biofuel feedstock.
As a major buyer and exporter of canola, Cargill connects Australian growers to global markets through our international trading network.

Canola is one of Australia’s most important agricultural products — and its future is bright yellow. Whether it’s providing healthy cooking oils, nutritious animal feed, or helping to fuel a low-carbon future, Cargill is proud to stand with Australian growers and communities in building a stronger, more sustainable oilseeds industry.
